“A 2013 report by the Joint Commissioning Panel for Mental Health found there to be over 1.6 million individuals suffering from eating disorders in the UK, 75% of whom were female. Analysis from 2022 by the Royal College of Psychiatrists indicates that hospital admissions for eating disorders increased by 84% in the last five years. Hospital admissions reached 24,268 in 2020/21, 11,049 more than in 2015/16. Admissions among children and young people with eating disorders rose the most, by 90% in the five-year period, from 3,541 to 6,713 episodes, with a 35.4% increase just in the last year alone. Among boys and young men, admissions rose by a staggering 128%, from 280 hospital admissions in 2015/16 to 637 in 2020/2021. There was also an increase of 79% seen in adults across the five years.”
